Oslo and Pilmayken 18.8.2025.
In the end of August, a mediation will take place between the Norwegian company Statkraft AS and the Mapuche Williche communities of the Pilmayken territory, represented by the Aylla Rewe of Ngen Mapu Kintuantü and ancestral authorities, Machi Millaray Huichalaf, spiritual authority from the Mapuche Williche people, and the council of lonkos.
The mediation is the result of the acceptance of a specific instance – a non-judicial grievance mechanism – by the Norwegian National Contact Point (NCP) for Responsible Business Conduct related to the development of hydroelectric power projects on the Pilmaiquén River in southern Chile.
The mediation will take place in Geneva, facilitated by a mediation team appointed by the NCP in consultation with the parties. It is guided by the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises on Responsible Business Conduct. As part of the preparatory process, a delegation from the NCP, supported by the Chilean NCP, visited Chile in January 2025, meeting with both parties and other local groups in the affected areas.
The NCP appreciates the trust both parties have placed in the NCP to facilitate the dialogue. Both parties are entering into mediation in good faith and with the expectation of moving towards a mutually acceptable solution.
More information on the specific instance can be found at NCP Norway’s website.
